Partnership Creates Landfill Model

A final prototype of the new EnviroScape Landfill model was the focus of a presentation and exhibit at the Solid Waste Management Association of North America's (SWANA) WasteCon 97 in St. Louis, Missouri. Information about the creative development process and a hands-on demonstration of the landfill model prototype showed the participants' a successful public/private partnership in environmental education.

The model was created through a partnership between EnviroScape and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA). DSWA is known throughout the world for innovation in landfill design and construction. The three-year creative process included modeling and field-testing improved versions of the model in order to arrive at a final prototype to debut at the SWANA WasteCon.

Technical and educational aspects of the model had to be factual as well as functional. In order to produce a balanced product, the landfill model review team included SWANA, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, experts from several engineering consulting firms, a wide representation of educators and citizens, and state and federal regulatory agents. DSWA took the lead role as the primary technical contact.

Many of the review team members were at the conference and enjoyed seeing the result of years of thoughtful development. The most frequently asked question was, "When can I get one?"

EnviroScape Wins in Texas!

Students, teachers, parents and siblings were all smiles Tuesday, February 10 as the Spring Branch Independent School District celebrated the success of a recent elementary Student Scholastic Competition.

The Watershed Management Research Project employed four EnviroScape models, and was sponsored by the 17th International Symposium of the North American Lake Management Society, Alan Plummer Associates, Apache Landscape Service, Comerica Bank, EMSI Incorporated, Gutierrez, Smouse, Wilmut and Associates, Houston Cellular, JT&A., Liddell, Sapp, Andrews and Newnam, Montgomery Watson Americas, Inc., Weingarten Realty Management Company, and Wildlife Supply Company.

Following a full demonstration of the EnviroScape II Model on nonpoint source and watershed issues, the students developed a project that described what was gained by their research. The project integrated science, language and visual arts.

Winning posters were selected among categories as Most Original Project, Most Artistic Project, Best Technical Project, and Most Participation by a School. A total of 27 studies were recognized and honored for their efforts. At the February 10 awards ceremony, the four EnviroScape models used for the program were presented to the Elementary Coordinator for Science for the Spring Branch Independent School District.

The posters are scheduled for further display at the upcoming Texas Water 98 annual conference in Galveston.

Tips from the Field!

To create a static exhibit, add photos and text to identify the sources of pollution and their prevention on the models. If there's room, use two EnviroScape models at the same time -- one showing pollution and the other with BMPs in place.

Groundwater Component

The new and improved Groundwater Component is now available.

Simplified from the original version, the new component is a silk-screened liner that fits into the EnviroScape base. The liner has permanent dividers to allow for the separation of aquifers. The new User's Guide, along with pumps and wells (sprayers and tubing) are included. The new liner is lighter and much easier to use!

An important first step to understanding groundwater is to make the connection between our activities and their potential effects on our groundwater.

Curriculum for Use with EnviroScape

We are pleased to offer the Air & Waste Management Association's Environmental Resource Guide (ERG) Nonpoint Source Pollution Prevention series as a great curriculum to use with EnviroScape. The series explores the impact of land use on the quality of water.

Topics include landfills, fertilizers, pesticides and erosion. Each ERG includes approximately 15 lessons with clearly stated educational objectives, background information, preparation instructions, hands-on activities and extension activities. The guides are designed to be integrated with general science, language arts, math, social studies and art curricula.

Lessons center on activities and class participation that make the information interesting and memorable, and teach students what they can do on their own to help protect the environment.

Activities are also designed to develop critical thinking skills, including observation, comparison, analysis and problem solving. All lessons have undergone rigorous technical review by environmental experts to ensure a sound scientific basis and all activities have been field tested by teachers.

Prices listed on the order form.
