CATERPILLAR and EnviroScape® Landfill: Building Awareness in U.S. & Developing Countries

As part of their standard equipment exhibits, Caterpillar, Inc. is using the EnviroScape® Landfill to help raise awareness of the importance of modern landfill systems and how they are constructed. Mark Welch, Caterpillar's Sr. Marketing Representative from the Corporate Waste Products Group says they are planning to use the model more and more in developing countries. Welch said, "People are extremely interested in the model. Once they understand the landfill concept they can understand the need for the equipment, regardless of the language they speak." Next step for CAT's EnviroScape is WasteEx in April in Mexico City.

"Official EnviroScape Contact" -- It's Only Natural

If you are an EnviroScape user, you probably don't really know how many people have been exposed to EnviroScape as a result of your educational programs.

EnviroScape is a part of what you do. And in so doing, you automatically create awareness and often an interest in the EnviroScape program. Bill Sharff, North Dakota State Water Commission, remarked, "I haven't found a person yet who doesn't want to get their hands on an EnviroScape once they see it and see what it can do."

Whether you are an environmental educator, civic leader, teacher or regulatory official, every time you do a program with EnviroScape, you are demon- strating a unique educational tool and enhancing your message with visual impact. It's no wonder "EnviroScapers" really believe in their programs.

It is for this reason we created the EnviroScape Contact Program. The contact program is designed to serve existing and potential users by providing local and regional access to information and ideas. Information is then readily available and able to be imparted on a more personal level from people who are using the program in the field, classroom or boardroom.

The Contact Program is already well underway. Here is a list of current EnviroScape Contacts. These are individuals that are at the top of their field and believe in the value of EnviroScape as an educational tool. This list will be updated in future issues of EnviroScape News as well as on the web site at www.enviroscapes.com.

  • Lynda Adams, Shelby Soil and Water Conservation District (OH)
  • Scott Duckett, City of Salem, Public Works Department (OR)
  • Barb Gigar, Iowa Department of Natural Resources
  • Helen Holdsworth, Texas Agricultural Extension Service
  • Cynthia Mallett, Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County (CA)
  • Brenda McDaniel, Gwinnet Clean & Beautiful (GA)
  • Roxanna Pierce, Metropolitan Department of Public Works of Nashville/Davidson County (TN)
  • Mark Rose, Great Plains RC&D (OK)
  • Kari Umphrey, York County Conservation District (PA)

We often get feedback from users about programs they have done. We also approach individuals and Contacts to participate in outside conferences and events where there is a mutual interest. We would like to share some of these with you. Here are a few examples of busy EnviroScapers.

New EnviroScape Contact, Brenda McDaniel, demonstrated EnviroScape as part of a teacher tour of the Annistown Elementary School's Secret Gardens at the NAAEE conference this past fall in Atlanta. Brenda is currently using the NPS, Landfill and Wetland models and has them scheduled through the end of this school year. Brenda remarked, "I love using EnviroScape and show it to people all the time, so I am delighted to be an EnviroScape Contact."

Another new Contact, Roxanna Pierce, participated in the International Erosion Control Association's (IECA) Annual Conference held in Nashville in February. IECA is a non-profit partner with EnviroScape. Roxanna demonstrated the EnviroScape as part of the IECA Resource area. The show was well attended and many people either had or had used EnviroScape. Roxanna said of the show, "It was a refreshing experience to be able to network with people from all over the world who possessed the common interest of protecting the environment through erosion control practices."

Mark Rose, EnviroScape Contact of several years, demonstrated his EnviroScape NPS and Hazardous Materials models at the Oklahoma State Capital Building as part of the Aquafest Festival. Mark tells us there were more than 500 students from across Oklahoma and state legislative leaders at the day long festival.

In March, EnviroScape was part of the NSTA Annual Conference in Boston with a presentation at the Center for Environmental Education's Water Education Share Fair. NPS Coordinator for EPA Region 1, Warren Howard represented EnviroScape as one of a dozen presenters as part of the national gathering of science educators.

While we would like to report everything, there simply is not the space or time. As you know, EnviroScape is everywhere! The Contact Program is gearing up with increased support and communication and lots of activities. Whether you are an "Official Contact" or not, we would love to hear from you about activities you are involved with -- and don't forget the photos.

And, if you are interested in becoming an "Official EnviroScape Contact" just call 703-631-8810 or e-mail and we'll be happy to send you out an application package. It's a natural extension of what many of you are already doing. We hope to hear from you.

Tips from the Field!

These tips are posted here for the first time, then find a home on our web site. Please send your tips.

To show integrated methods for solid waste management, you can create management areas at your modern landfill for bulky materials, tires, composting windrows, etc. to represent the recovery programs you are operating. You can also move the recycling drop-off center to the landfill area if you would like to show a transfer site in its place. And, for home composting, use toothpicks to build a mini-composter for behind the residence and fill with real leafy material.

To show air borne pollution, bring along a small battery-powered fan when you are doing an EnviroScape demonstration. Use the fan to blow particles of drink mix or cocoa when applying to landscape. (Added note: baby power can also be applied from above with or without a fan to create a glossy-type residue on the surface of the model to emulate smog).

Mini-micro machines can be purchased at stores like Toys-R-Us, Walmart and K-Mart in sets that represent Marine activities, Trash collection, Automobiles and Construction. These sets are perfect scale to the roads on your EnviroScape model and may contain small people to enhance your display. But watch out, these are the things that find legs when you're busy!
