Views from Your Lake: A Choice, An Action

Everyone who lives on a lake or visits a lake knows how many activities the lake supports and how many "pieces" there are in the lake's ecosystem -- from shoreline to the lush wooded areas beyond the lake, from the swimming and boating docks to deeper water, and from the upland slopes to the residential areas where we live and work and play. An uncomplicated and beautiful world centers on the lake.

The process of lake  management is also simple. It begins with us and our daily round of activities as we romp with our pets, care for our lawns, collect our leftover materials, build our houses. The lake gives so much and asks so little: that we protect the habitat of the natural creatures that live with us on the lake; help keep upland soils in place; protect the shoreline from too much pruning and pesticides; and think carefully about where and how we place our buildings on the land.

This full-color poster, created by Terrene Institute in cooperation with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 5, depicts a lake view divided in two, one half illustrating the impacts of environmental stressors, the other half illustrating environmentally friendly approaches to dealing with issues such as household hazardous materials, septic systems, lawncare, and boating.
