EnviroScape Setup in Maritime Aquarium -- Some "Marble" Tips!
[the following tip was emailed to EnviroScape after the last newsletter]
“I work and volunteer at The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT, which is devoted primarily to educating our visitors about the care of The Long Island Sound and the life in it.
We have been using the "Coastal" EnviroScape model for the past several months, and I can't tell you how many people have told me that it's a wonderfully graphic way to show how the various forms of non-point source pollution enter The Long Island Sound.
The exhibit is set up in a gallery largely devoted to educating visitors about the watershed, non-point source pollution, and the ways they can make a positive difference in the water quality of the Sound. The EnviroScape fits in perfectly!
During the course of the day several thousand visitors would pass by the exhibit, [so instead of using the fluids (water, drink mixes)] . . . we went with marbles! We ask the participants to make believe the marbles are the pollution of their choice, and when they place a marble on the EnviroScape, they see that the pollution eventually works its way into the water. It's very effective! --Volunteer, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, Norwalk, CT
Solution for EnviroScape Demos with Large Groups
For demonstrations with large groups of people coming through or if you have limited time you may want to consider using two of the same model. This works especially well with the NPS Watershed, Wetlands, and Hazardous Materials models.
Model #1 will represent the watershed in a degraded condition demonstrating how pollution, erosion, and flooding (wetlands) occurs. Participants will see how pollution occurs without having to clean up the model for the pollution prevention demonstration. Continuously rain on it or have participants rain on it, only pausing to add more pollutants and empty the water catcher.
Model #2 is fully restored before the demonstration -- have it side by side with the degraded watershed. With the extra time you can reforest, add the vegetative borders, put a sign up for no illegal storm drain dumping, contour plow the farmland to reduce runoff, add a small dam, restore wetlands, build a containment pond for the factory and much more. Have water bottles and pollutants available to the participants so they can sprinkle pollutants on both and then rain over them and see the startling difference that proper land management can make in controlling water pollution.
Your audience will not only learn how pollution occurs but can compare and contrast the prevention methods, and can leave feeling positive about their individual impact on the environment.
Do You Want To Show A Mountain Range On Your Model?
To give the illusion of a full mountain range on your EnviroScape, simply make a backdrop. Take a picture of your local mountain range or use an existing picture (panoramic would be ideal). Have the mountain range photo printed in full color and enlarged: the mountain range should be 28 inches long to span the back of the EnviroScape; choose the desired height (7 inches looks great!). Affix the printed photo on a piece of sturdy cardboard, cut off extra cardboard. Laminate or waterproof. Using Velcro, attach the mountain range to the backside of the EnviroScape Top. You now can use it on the NPS and Wetlands models to demonstrate erosion and deforestation issues, but with the look of a full mountain range. Enjoy!
